Joplin Schools Rebuilt on Same Site

The linked campus of Soaring Heights Elementary and East Middle School opened in Joplin in early January. Both schools needed to be rebuilt after they were struck by the May 2011 tornado that devastated the Joplin community and killed 161 people. In total, 10 buildings in the Joplin School District were damaged due to the tornado.

Fifth Living Building Announced at Smith College

The 2,300-square-foot Bechtel Environmental Classroom at Smith College in Whately recently became the world’s fifth living building and New England’s first under the Living Building Challenge. Amherst, Mass.-based Coldham & Hartman Architects served as the architect on the project, while Deerfield, Mass.-based Scapes Builders was the contractor.

New Construction Begins at Columbia University

Construction and renovations began Feb. 11 on Bancroft Hall, a family housing residence located at the Teachers College of Columbia University. CetraRuddy, a New York-based architectural and design firm, was awarded the architectural contract for the eight-story building, which was designed by Emery Roth in 1911 and first served as a luxury apartment hotel.

Texas Christian University (TCU) debuted a new residence hall, designed by Tulsa, Okla.-based KSQ Architects, in December. The two-building residence hall, known as Marion and Clark Halls, offers 400 suite-style student beds designed for sophomores. Common areas, study lounges and baking kitchens are included to build community within the LEED Gold-certified space.
