Ariz. County Passes $447 Million in School-Construction Bonds

PHOENIX — Voters in the south central Arizona county of Maricopa passed seven of eight school-construction bonds totaling $447 million. All seven bonds passed with at least a 60 percent vote, according to reports of the unofficial election results.

The seven districts to pass bonds include Scottsdale USD ($118 million); Kyrene Elementary SD in Tempe, Ariz. ($117 million); Chandler USD ($84.3 million); Washington Elementary SD in Phoenix ($65 million); Cartwright SD in Phoenix ($27.8 million); Phoenix Elementary SD ($20.2 million); and Queen Creek USD ($15 million). The majority of the districts plan to use the funds to renovate and expand buildings and upgrade HVAC, mechanical and electrical systems.

School district budget overrides didn’t fair as well in Maricopa County, where nine of 17 overrides passed. Creighton Elementary SD in Phoenix was one of the districts to pass a budget override. The $3.2 million override will be collected over seven years to pay for programming district-wide.

“We had a lot of volunteers who worked very hard to educate the residents of our community,” explains Renee Sandler Shamblin of Yes for Creighton Kids. “We are fortunate that once people in the community learned what an override is and why it is so important, they showed their support.”
